This being an Olympic Year and all
I mean pay "tribute" to not only a GREAT company "Speedo" but also to the "legacy" of Bill "Speedo" Lee by listing the "funniest" stories you can send me ( tears of laughter are chemically different than the tears you cry in sorrow ) send me your "funniest" stories about Speedo's and by "example" let me kick this off with one of my own
In 1968, the Trials were in Long Beach... and Santa Clara had it's usual "fleet" of Hertz rent-a-cars ( at the Cincy indoors we had 48 cars, but Hertz ran out, so they gave us 3 limos...one to me,Bob Limm, and Lynnie Vidali.... .ALL three got wrecked...but that's another story )
My Hertz rental was a "write me a ticker red" Chevy "somethingorother" and my "posse" was mostly younger "charges" that George pretty much knew had slim chances of making the team...but George was always planning ahead... ( I was to "inspire them to future greatness" ...he said to me when I was reacting with a "Yikes"....! )
So..we come rolling in to Denny's for dinner...and there's Bill "Speedo" Lee sitting by himself..in the corner...and quickly my "charges" wanted to "hit him up for some freebies" ..I wouldn't let them, as I thought to myself how much he probably enjoyed that brief "respit" alone .
When we leave, I notice Bill is gone...and just as I finish backing out, the car is filled with "squeals of delight" ... as somehow Bill had driven off in my car...which was "conspicuously empty" ... yet I failed to notice...that the one we climbed into..was FULL with his "bottomless Black Bags"....of Speedos !
In the :I;m NOT making this UP" dept...here is how it worked.... GM at that time only had 300 key/lock set combo's acros that entire production year of that model.....
While we had "hit" the "Speedo Lottery" ( no..I explained that "kharma IS and Kharma DOES" so I'm pretty sure none were taken ) it WAS because of Bill....
he had in fact "hit" on a 1 in 300 "longshot" ( being Irish...that;s when I "proceed directly to the craps tables in Tahoe ! )
