What I "enjoy"...IS..."Optimizing Things" ...
that just might mean .... "stumbling" on a "situation" where in a matter of "moments" you can apply
"the Learning of a Lifetime" ( which is what "WhatsHisName" said to the Pope when the pope was informed ... it took him only 1 hr to paint the painting
to which he replied....
YOU are NOT "paying me" for my hour
YOU are paying me for ...
"the Knowledge of a Lifetime"
BUT....what about NOW..at the "other" end of perspective
the Planet...IS ...in Big Trouble ( let's defer that discussion )
what about YOU ..NOW who's reading this....? ( "file away" the STORY about how you got 2 my page...)
how can i help U ?
I’m best at innovative strategies, artful negotiation, with the experience and ability to get “the deal” closed.
My mentor in “Game Theory” at the Harvard Business School, was none other than Howard Raiffa, the “codifier” of the Science of Game Theory.
I accepted a low-pay offer in 1977 ( in spite of my Mechanical/Electrical Engineering degree from Stanford where I earned a full academic scholarship. )
in the wild and crazy “Hobby Computer Kit” market, knowing full well it would exceed $10 B in under 10 years.
INDUSTRY HISTORY
October 1, 1993 to present
INTERNET CONSULTING – JOB 1 Group
On October 1, 1993 the Acceptable Use Policy for the Internet was modified to allow commercial traffic, content, and transactions. I "unretired" for the 3rd or 4th time (?) and formed the Internet Services Company Job 1 Systems, Inc. ( Pacifico's "founder"...Mary Curtiss,John Kinsella, Mike Bruner, and Richard Tom were my investors at $ 5,000 each...I paid then back 3x in 27 mo.)
supporting both startups as well as mature companies seeking an Internet presence, functioning as e-commerce "front end" to companies including Dolby Labs,Zilog, and Pacifico (largest PR/Advertising firm in Silicon Valley). Personally created and “ramped” 48 domains including Webtv.com, Santa.com, and Digispeech.com (third "voice over IP" Internet Telephone company enabling international phone calls for free over the Internet), sold to an Israeli company in 1999.
Provided the principal strategy for Internet startup Best.com most notably directing the development of the first multi-homed UNIX operating system enabling thousands of websites to run on a single PC efficiently at minimum cost. Our research into Internet security revealed a surprising gap between such methods in the US vs. Soviet methods, hence we sought out, recruited, and sponsored the most talented security specialist formerly supporting the impenetrable KGB network. Best Internet Communications Inc. became the largest and most successful web hosting company in less than 90 days, subsequently sold to public company Verio Inc. in 1999.
Startup Above.net recruited my services so that my customers IP addresses would appear on their bandwidth as reference accounts to assist in closing early sales. Personally referred over 300 customers and edited business plans. Successful public offering of $390 M million 3rd year, subsequently sold following year for $1.5 Billion to Metropolitan Networks.
April 1987 to Oct 1, 1993
CONSULTING – JOB 1 Systems, Inc. – Strategic assistance to startups
Retired as Chairman of Networked Picture Systems to retain all of my privacy and prepare Initial Public Offering of NPS April 1997. Assisted other startups in the technology markets and services industries. Activities included principal business plan development, finance, recruiting/staffing, strategic planning, and selling/closing key customers and alliances.
January 1984 to April 1987
FOUNDER / CHAIRMAN / CEO - NETWORKED PICTURE SYSTEMS INC.
Developed and marketed the first PC-based full color desktop publishing system. Personally developed all selling strategies and methods then recruited and trained all sales and support staff. Served in multiple capacities typical to startups, directing all areas of the operation, including initial strategies to fund, hire, and motivate staff in a lean financial environment. Products consisted of networked PC based graphics workstations for video, film, color separations, and high quality color printing, marketed against well established vendors of mini and mainframe systems. Successful public offering in April 1987 slightly more than two years after inception.
January 1981 to January 1984
FOUNDER / CHAIRMAN / CEO - VIA VIDEO INC.
Pioneered digital video workstations for multimedia presentations and animation in video, film, and print formats. In addition to developing the products, I had to close all initial sales, then recruit and train all sales and support staff. Minor marketing variations were able to support up to seven vertical markets, ("Producer's Advantage", "Advertiser's Advantage", "Presenter's Advantage", for example). These offerings included aninnovative package design system, complete with a shelf space optimization program for retailers.
With venture funding from Battelle Institute, Brentwood, and Menlo Ventures, created custom real-time digital video hardware and software utilizing VME microcomputers and real-time UNIX operating system. In 1983 I personally developed field-deployable dispersed command center for General Doyle, head of the US Army in under 3 months using skunk works staff of 3. System was a sophisticated picture database, mapping, and intelligence system utilizing first analog WORM drive technology ( Writeable Optical Random Memory).
This was the first use of digital video and WORM drives on a fiber optics network comprising a technology now known as a "video server".
Personally introduced first WORM products for Matsushita, COMDEX 1983. Introduced PANTONE color calibration for graphic arts to the computer graphics market. Negotiated first exclusive license of PANTONE Matching System in the PC marketplace (1984). Dupont purchased company in 1986.
May 1977 to December, 1980
DIRECTOR OF SALES AND SERVICE - CROMEMCO INC.
Pioneering early personal computer Company, I joined company in its first year at under $1M run rate, 9 employees. Recruited and trained our in-house sales and support staff as well as the international sales and support network. Ramped valuation to $66M with fewer than 100 employees in under three years. Personally developed the first DBMS database product in the PC marketplace, initially designed to support sales and service activities. Suitably packaged and supported, the DBMS became a most popular software product by years' end.
Cromemco is most noted for the first patented microcomputer based NTSC computer graphics display ("DAZZLER" 1978), and the first multi-user UNIX implementation outside of BELL Labs ("CROMIX" late 1979). Starting late 1978, employee Roger Sippl and I developed specification for CRIS (Cromemco Relational Information System), which he independently evolved into INFORMIX. CROMEMCO purchased by Dynatek.
June 1973 to June 1975
RESPONSE OF HAWAII, INC.
Initially hired as accounting and database programmer, promoted to account representative to sell accounting and statistical packages to local firms. In particular, developed proprietary tax map key assessment system for use in evaluating real estate in the Hawaiian Islands. Prior to departing for business school, I sold econometric models to large domestic and multinational clients such as Bank of Hawaii, American Savings, and AMFAC. Authored a real Estate Regression Model for Blackfield Hawaii, which was eventually adopted in 1976 by Gov. Arioshi for statewide tax assessment.
EDUCATION
1975-1977
Harvard Business School, MBA with emphasis on finance, capital markets, international marketing, and new ventures. 1969-1973
Stanford University, BSEE / ME with emphasis on Digital Systems. Full scholarship based on academic achievement. Received honors including NCAA, Stanford, and PAC-8 student-athlete of the year awards in 1972 and 1973, including a $2,000 graduate school scholarship (which I let someone else use).
OTHER
1968 & 1972
Member of the US Olympic Swimming Team, bronze medal in the 200m Breastroke and World Record holder from August 1970 to August 1972, 17 national AAU and 7 NCAA individual championships.
